Filipinos in Jersey City gathered in Downtown, Jersey City for the 32nd Annual Santacruzan to recognize Virgin Mary. The event started at 10AM with street fair, but the highlight was the Santacruzan Procession – a religious parade celebrating the month of May — Virgin Mary’s month.

In the afternoon, the procession was preceded by the Holy Eucharist at St. Mary’s Church at 2nd Street and Erie Street. After the mass, the participants of the procession assembled outside to start the parade around the area. Revelers enjoyed the rest of the afternoon watching on stage performances.

PACCAL AND KALUSUGAN COALITION CELEBRATE AMERICAN HEART MONTH

Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) will hold a Valentine’s Party Dinner Dance and American Heart Month at 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010. It will be held at Our Lady of Victory Auditorium, 240 Ege Avenue, Jersey City, NJ (near Westside Avenue).

PACCAL is a community partner of Kalusugan Coalition in the Project AsPIRE study addressing hypertension among Filipinos in New Jersey and New York. With Valentine’s Day and February being American Heart Month, this project becomes more significant. Kalusugan Coalition will offer FREE Blood Pressure, Glucose and Cholesterol screenings from 5:00 pm tp 8:30 p.m and invite participants to become involved in a Community Health Worker program to help them learn how to become healthier. (Anyone who wants to be screened should avoid eating 2 hours before the screenings.)

Additionally, in an effort to promote “healthy marriage and family strengthening” in the Filipino community during this Valentine’s celebration, PACCAL will honor 50 couples who are married for 25 years and above. This event promises to be a happy and truly momentous occasion for the month of hearts.

“Bayan Mo!” is a [...]]]> Want to help the Typhoon Ondoy victims but don’t know where to send your donations here in Jersey City? There are actually various groups organizing relief efforts and fundraising events to help our fellow Filipinos back in the Philippines. One of them is “Bayan Mo“, sponsored by Nosaj Entertainment and Cassanova Entertainment.

“Bayan Mo!” is a fundraising event where you can spend an afternoon of live music and entertainment at Fiesta Grill (West Side Avenue and Montgomery Street, Jersey City). Everyone is invited and encouraged to bring monetary donations and goods. Monetary proceeds will be sent thru ABS-CBN foundation while goods will be shipped via LBC. They are also accepting cash, goods, clothing, and any kind of help for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

First batch of monetary donations are due tomorrow, October 3rd. First batch of “in-kind” donations are due October 15.

Our Grand Marshal, Dr. Lorie D. Lizardo, her family, and the officers of PAFCOM cordially invite you to PAFCOM’s annual get-together-PICNIC on July 19 at the Liberty Park in Jersey City. This is also a way of celebrating the success of our Grand Parade and Festival and most importantly, a way of thanking you for the support you have shown and demonstrated towards PAFCOM.

The event was attended by approximately 150 people, which also included Kids For Christ, [...]]]> A Filipino religious organization here in Jersey City – Couples For Christ-Foundation for Family and Life (CFC-FFL) – held their Christmas Party last night (Saturday. December 20, 2008) at Maria Room of Our Lady of Mercy Hall in Greenville section of JC.

The event was attended by approximately 150 people, which also included Kids For Christ, Youth For Christ, and other guests.

CFC-FFL (Chapter 1 – Jersey City) is divided into different units, and each performed a couple of numbers. One unit danced their own version of Pandanggo Sa Ilaw – a native Filipino dance in which dancers balance a lit candle lamp on their palms. Some groups sang Christmas Carols and religious songs.

Members of Kids For Christ re-enacted the nativity scene with full props and costumes; while the members of Youth For Christ sang songs. When everyone’s done, the dance floor opened.

Were you at this festival? St. Aedan Parish (in McGinley Square area of Jersey City) holds an annual festival where there are rides, music, food, raffles, and other activities. This year, the event started on September 18, 2008 and lasted for four days (September 21).

Along with other nationalities, different Filipino groups volunteered for the event. Like last year and the year before that, my friend Elmer Karaan was in-charge of the music. Couple for Christ members watched some booths one night, and the Buensuceso Family were all around.

Fr. Joe Astarita – the Parish Administrator – was happy with the turnout of the event. And based on the figure that he mentioned during one of his masses, this event will continue for next year.
