Volunteers Enjoy Breakfast at St. Aedans Church

Today, organizers of St. Aedan Parish Festival two weeks ago thanked volunteers by providing a nice breakfast after the church’s 10AM mass.

Organizers served donuts, bagels, pastries and coffee at the vestibule of the church after the Eucharistic ceremony. Steve Kuban – a known Catholic singer – who led the choir at the mass, later joined several volunteers and parishioners.

Several Filipinos were in attendance such as AUDIO PROJECT DJ Elmer Karaan (and his family) who volunteers yearly by providing music and entertainment to the carnival/festival. Check out some photos that this blogger took using his phone:

How to Help Typhoon Ondoy Victims in the Philippines

Want to help the Typhoon Ondoy victims but don’t know where to send your donations here in Jersey City? There are actually various groups organizing relief efforts and fundraising events to help our fellow Filipinos back in the Philippines. One of them is “Bayan Mo“, sponsored by Nosaj Entertainment and Cassanova Entertainment.

“Bayan Mo!” is a fundraising event where you can spend an afternoon of live music and entertainment at Fiesta Grill (West Side Avenue and Montgomery Street, Jersey City). Everyone is invited and encouraged to bring monetary donations and goods. Monetary proceeds will be sent thru ABS-CBN foundation while goods will be shipped via LBC. Entertainers, singers/bands, performers are also invited to share their talent, so if you know one, send them the details below:

In line with this, three Pinoy groups in New Jersey — Anakbayan New Jersey/New York Chapter, NAFCON and SANDIWA — combined forces in organizing community relief drive to deliver badly needed relief goods to our most affected brothers and sister in the Philippines. They are also accepting cash, goods, clothing, and any kind of help for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

First batch of monetary donations are due tomorrow, October 3rd. First batch of “in-kind” donations are due October 15.

Rolando Lavarro: First Filipino-American to Run for City Council

Rolando Lavarro — a Jersey City native and alumnus of St. Paul’s Grammar School and St. Peter’s Preparatory School, announced his candidacy as Councilman of Jersey City, Ward A. His campaign kicked-off last night at Fiesta Grill, located at 819 West Side Avenue.

Mr. Lavarro will join the team of Louis Manzo (JC Mayoral candidate)

Mr. Lavarro is a known community activist, legislative pro, and a funding expert. He is the first Filipino-American to run for city council. So Good luck po!

St. Aedan Line Dancing Party

The weather was cold last night, but St. Aedan Gym/Auditorium in McGinley Square area of JC was sizzling hot! Filipinos from various parts of Jersey City flocked to the auditorium to enjoy one night of line dancing.

I was informed that it was a joint effort by all parishioners, reason why the turnout was huge. Did you go? Check out the picture gallery below, you might see a familiar Pinoy!

Simbang Gabi in the Philippines

Filipinos here in Jersey City may not be able to participate Simbang Gabi and/or Misa de Gallo in the Philippines, but the religious groups are in full force to serve the faithfuls. There are three churches here in JC that offer Simbang Gabi (Evening Masses) and Misa de Gallo (Dawn masses).

Filipinos at St. Aedan Parish Festival

Were you at this festival? St. Aedan Parish (in McGinley Square area of Jersey City) holds an annual festival where there are rides, music, food, raffles, and other activities. This year, the event started on September 18, 2008 and lasted for four days (September 21).

Along with other nationalities, different Filipino groups volunteered for the event. Like last year and the year before that, my friend Elmer Karaan was in-charge of the music. Couple for Christ members watched some booths one night, and the Buensuceso Family were all around.

Fr. Joe Astarita – the Parish Administrator – was happy with the turnout of the event. And based on the figure that he mentioned during one of his masses, this event will continue for next year.

18th Philippine-American Friendship Day Parade

Two weeks from now, one of the biggest Filipino events in Jersey City will happen: the 18th Philippine-American Friendship Day Parade. The Friendship Day symbolizes the friendship between America and the Philippines. In New York, they celebrate this sooner — as early as first day of June.

The festival will start off with a mass at St. Aedan Church. Filipino groups will assemble on Montgomery Street, followed by the parade to Downtown, Jersey City at the Exchange Place.

This year, the celebrities performing will be the Song Diva Jessa Zaragoza, and musician Migs Ayesa. At the Exchange Place, there will be various booths, food galore, cultural shows, flea market, health fair, kiddie entertainment and games, so expect a lot of fun!

4th Phil-US Expo at the Armory

Here’s the annual Phil-US Expo here in Jersey City. It’s going to be on May 17 and 18. Several Philippine celebrities like the voluptuous Katrina Halili, comedian Allan K, and singer Jay-R will be entertaining attendees.

As far as I know, entrance is not free. $15 should be paid at the door.

Also, expect Filipino businesses exhibiting their products and services. Job Fair will also be available. Lots of interesting stuff, so it should be fun.

Event is presented by Topnotch Electronics and GMA Pinoy TV.
