This is like a dream-come-true to me. I know Pinoys here in JC have been wanting a Jollibee that is not as far as the one in New York, and we finally got one! Jollibee Jersey City is the second one in the East Coast.

Jollibee has been hiring crew starting last April, and they will have one more on June 4, 2011, Saturday, according to its Facebook Page.

What’s your favorite Jollibee food? I’ve been craving for a 2-piece Burger Steak with extra steak sauce. Yummy!

Finally the long wait is over: Jollibee has arrived in the east coast. It is located in Woodside, Queens, New York, at least 35 minutes away from Jersey City if you are driving. Jollibee opened its door on February 14, 2009 – Valentine’s Day.

From the news and stories I’ve read and heard, the line is long and it stretches to at least a block. So if you are planning to go there, expect to wait at least 2 hours before you can get a first bite of its famous fried chicken called “Chicken Joy”. Some say it’s not as crisp as the chickenjoy in Manila, Philippines. Others say the burger is “forgettable”. Other reviews say that the best to order are mango pie (price: $2.29) and buttered corn($1.99 for small, $3.59 large).

Hundreds of People want a piece of chickenjoy

Have you been to Jollibee New York? I was somewhat hoping for a branch here in Jersey City, which is I think strategic, as JC is only a single PATH ride away from NYC. But since Jollibee NY is about 13 miles away, I’ll settle for Red Ribbon on Newark Avenue if I couldn’t get the chance to go to NY. I’m also patiently waiting for Max’s Fried Chicken to open here.

Jollibee
Description: Filipino fast food, hamburger, fried chicken, palabok, mango pie, etc
Date Opened: February 14, 2009
Address: 62-29 Roosevelt Ave, Queens NY 11377 (map)
Phone: (718) 426-4445

Philippine Bread House’s Ube was featured last week in a blog called “The Village Voice“. They classified the delicacy as one of the “strange snacks of the world”, and I’m not surprised. Filipinos love to eat odd things and we are not afraid to experiment some varieties. For instance, where can you find people putting “pink” condiment (combination of mayonnaise and ketchup) on hamburgers? It sounds strange, but it’s pretty normal to Filipinos.

As a Pinoy who grew up in the Philippines, ube is one of my favorite “kakanin”. It’s one of my favorite ice cream and cake flavors next to chocolate…

…The sweetness and moistness of ube is often exploited in sweet pastries in the Philippines. Filipinos also love the bright purple color, and use it in puddings, cakes, frostings, candies, breads, and ice creams….

In a week, she will be flying to Manila to personally receive her Banaag Award.

“Sa tanda kong ito, hindi pa ako nakarating sa Malacañang” she told Asian Journal in her interview last November 20, 2008 during the PAFCOM’s Press Conference for Community Heroes Award where she is also an awardee for being an outstanding leader in our community.

Congratulations and cheers po, Aling Patricia!

Read the full news inside the post …

JERSEY CITY—Patricia Berberabe has a lot to be thankfulfor.

First, her family business is thriving despite the bad economic times.

Second, her family is bringing Max’s, the famous fried chicken restaurant in the Philippines, to New Jersey and New York.

On top of that, she has been reaping awards left and right.

Earlier this year, she was one of four Filipino recipients of this year’s Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Awards, awarded by Asian American Business Development Center (AABDC) to honor achievements of entrepreneurs and corporate professionals.

The 67-year-old Pat is president of Phil-Am Trading, Inc., an importer and distributor of various Philippine food products. Her family also owns different restaurants and groceries that cater to the Fil-Am community.

A couple of weeks ago, she received another wonderful news. She was chosen by the Commission of Filipino Overseas as one of this year’s Presidential Awardees and in two weeks, she will by flying to Manila to receive the award from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself.
“Sa tanda kong ito, hindi pa ako nakarating sa Malacañang,” the soft-spoken Pat told the Asian Journal recently. Needless to say, she is looking forward to receiving her Banaag Award from the president. More than the awards she has been receiving, Pat is visibly excited about bringing the famous Max’s fried chicken to the East Coast.

“Medyo nakakainip na,” she admits, adding that plans of bringing the chain, first to Jersey City, was an idea hatched back in 2006.
“We already have weeks of training, from Hawaii to Manila to Glendale, California. I can’t wait,” Pat adds. Aside from being a hands-on business woman, Pat is also known in the community as a leader.

Among the organizations where she plays an active role are the Philippine American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM) and Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League (PACCAL). PAFCOM is also set to honor Pat with an award in community service at the 2009 Community Heroes Awards scheduled for next year in recognition of her efforts in leading, supporting, volunteering and participating in community undertakings big and small.
